Joke Woke

1

RISD Fall 2019
Advised by Richard Rose

2

“Repeating a word and replacing its initial with “W” or “Sh” to give emphasis on the word is very characteristic of the Hindi- English vernacular in India. The name “Joke Woke” is a play on that. With “woke” now often being used ironically to critique the trend and pretense of calling oneself woke, Joke Woke is a comedy festival willing to to look at everything critically, turn trends/cultures on their heads and subvert anything and everything. For a society that has been censoring the voices of its people for so long, stand-up comedy provides an out. Through diverse line-ups, panel discusions, workshops, open mic opportunities, improv and sketch events, Joke Woke is committed to enthusing the South Asian stand-up community and providing a platform to encourage amateur comics to “stand-up” and share their stories, opinions, observations and well, jokes.”

3
Identity utilizes a dynamic and interactive typographic mark with a “bar stool” (as an alternate glyph for the letter “k”) a typical prop on a stand-up set/stage, that rotates when interacted with to reinforce the idea of toppling conventional stand-up and allowing for more voices and perspectives

4
Behavior of the “bar stool”  also suggests an anxious or nervous energy to celebrate amateur comics and a relatively young stand-up scene in South Asia

Identity + Campaign + Signage and Wayfinding + Print
